holiday (1938) + changing gears

Kate - check.
Cary - check.
Cukor - check.
Ogden Stewart - check.

The cast, director and writer were gathered here in a little warm-up exercise for The Philadelphia Story. All that was really missing was Jimmy Stewart to come in and add some refining touches.

Holiday succeeds despite its obvious conclusion due to the levity of its main players and the quirkiness of its ensemble cast. While it lacks the laughs of Cukor/Ogden Stewart's "Dinner at Eight" and "Philadelphia Story," and Hepburn/Grant's "Bringing Up Baby," it is still a solid little comedy, easily surpassing all but the best romantic comedies of the last 40 years.

In other news: As I find myself spending more and more time with music and less time with movies I may shift gears on Obsolete Vernacular, a blog that has thus far been solely devoted to classic and world cinema. It is very possible that answerprint.blogspot.com will slowly become the net's first dedicated Classic Cinema/Indie Rock blog. John Vanderslice would be proud.

back soon

Back soon with thoughts on movies and even some music...
